Okonomiyaki karui
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located in Nishi-Shichijo, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, Okonomiyaki karui serves dishes kept warm on tabletop griddles, from its signature Karui-yaki combining yakisoba and yakiudon to diverse okonomiyaki and Izumo dashimaki omelet made with Shimane eggs.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The most eye-catching item on the menu is the house-specialty Karui-yaki. It combines fried yakisoba and yakiudon noodles in a single sauté, loaded with staples like pork, beef, squid, and shrimp alongside cabbage, bean sprouts, a fried egg, Kujo green onions, and red pickled ginger. Seasoned with a blend of savory brown sauce and soy sauce, it brings the fun of breaking through the mound of noodles and toppings as you eat.
Naturally, there is also an extensive lineup of classic okonomiyaki and yakisoba. Selections range from standard pork or squid okonomiyaki and multi-ingredient mixed variations to pancakes loaded with shrimp, green onions, and mayonnaise, or chewy mochi combined with melted cheese. Diners can customize their order with add-ons such as extra noodles layered on top or an egg pressed onto the crust. Because each dish sits directly on a tabletop teppan griddle, everything stays piping hot without cooling down, keeping the meal comfortable and unhurried.
While waiting for main dishes to cook, or when snacking alongside a drink, the teppan side dishes come into their own. Offerings highlight the aromatic sear unique to the griddle, including Izumo dashimaki rolled omelet and runny-egg tonpeiyaki made with deep-yolk eggs from Shimane Prefecture, lean domestic beef rump steak, and squid tentacles sautéed with Kujo green onions in butter and soy sauce. The beverage list features draft Sapporo Black Label beer, highballs, and assorted chuhai, as well as fruit drinks with non-alcoholic options and desserts.
The restaurant operates for dinner from 17:00 to 22:00 and accepts table reservations. Electronic payments such as credit cards and PayPay are accepted, and both takeout and delivery options are available, making it convenient whether dining in or craving teppan flavors at home.
